Who's who

Anything you need to know about St. Andrew's can be found either on this website or by contacting the church office on 0161 485 2648. Gill Pennells, our Administrator, should be able to answer all your questions or she can put you in contact with someone who will be able to help. An enormous number of different people help run the church but here are some key people you are likely to meet.

Vicar: Rev Christopher Hobbs is responsible for the whole parish and is based at St.Andrew's Church but also takes services at Emmanuel. Christopher comes originally from Sydney in Australia. After being an assistant minister in High Barnet and Newcastle upon Tyne, and after twenty years as Vicar of St Thomas Oakwood in north London, he and Margaret came to St Andrew's at the end of May 2017. Their three adult sons have left home.

Vicar: Rev Anthony Barnshaw is based at Emmanuel Church but also takes services at St Andrew’s.

Minister: Rev Peter Selby has been a member of St Andrews for many years where he has worshipped with his wife and three children who have now all grown up. Rev Peter Selby at ordination (Chester Diocese with permission)He has recently been ordained as a Minister in Secular employment. This means that in as well as helping in the ministry team at St Andrews. Peter also takes the good news of Jesus and His Kingdom to the hospital where he works as a consultant.


Reader: Peter Budd was born in 1957 in Asmara, Eritrea. His parents worked for the Red Sea Mission Team (nowlay reader Peter smiling called Reach Across) and it was as a child that he committed his own life to Jesus. It was at Manchester University that he met Alma, and they were married in 1982. He is now Professor of Polymer Chemistry and his research group develops novel materials for a variety of industrial and medical applications. Peter and Alma have been attending St. Andrew's since 1990, and he was licensed as a Reader in 2003.


Reader: Jennie Prince was born in Manchester. She was brought up in a Christian family and can't really remember a time when she didn't regard herself as a follower of Jesus. After a physics degree, she returned to Manchester to train as a medical physicist, and she has worked in this field in the NHS ever since. Jennie and her husband Jim moved to St Andrew's church in 1999. They have two daughters. Jennie has been a Reader since 2008.

Children's and Youth Worker: Carron Hopwood is married to Brian (known as Scouse).  They don't have any children but do have two very lovely dogs Millie, and Biddy. Carron did her Youth and Children’s work training at Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to work in mental health for five years, getting her Post-Graduate Certificate in common mental health problems from the University of Manchester. Carron made the move into full time ministry in 2008, something she knew she would do since she was 12 years old. Carron is passionate about sharing Jesus and the Word of God with children and young people, and anyone else who will listen! Carron and Scouse are both obsessed with America and anything American and love to eat out particularly at Red’s True BBQ and Five Guys!

 Administrator: Gill Pennells was born in Chelmsford, Essex and was brought up to go to church from an Gill Pennells - Administratorearly age. The Christian faith began to make sense to her at about 15 years old as she got more involved with the small local church. After art school in Norwich she had a formative year at Lee Abbey, a Christian holiday and conference centre on the wonderful North Devon coast. There she met her future husband, Steve who worked in the gardens. As Administrator's secretary at Lee Abbey, she then worked in typesetting in Surrey and later Manchester.
